Digium introduced its first IP handsets on Feb. 1, with three models aimed at the ordinary worker, the power user and the big bosses. The D40, D50 and D70 are expected to become available in April, with prices starting at $129 for the two-line D40. The new handsets are designed specifically to leverage the features of Digium's Asterisk communications platform and the Switchvox line of unified communications systems. These phones boast as part of their software an application engine that includes a JavaScript API that allows direct interaction with core features of the phone. The Switchboard Web interface that Digium builds into Switchvox systems is now available for the phone itself, putting the user in control of advanced features such as presence management, queue monitoring, recording and voicemail control.
